This project brought me outside of my comfort zone. Not only was I working in a group setting, but I was working outside of the Marquette University community for Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. However, it gave me the opportunity to interact with young people from the community and learn about their creative experiences with ArtWorks for Milwaukee.
When we arrived to the Art Institute of Milwaukee, the students all seemed rather shy and we struggled to select a student who would be interested in sharing their story.
After taking a few photos student Domonique Whitehurst and his work stood out to us. He began his internship this fall after his aunt suggested he join the program, because of his love for art. While his uncle, who has a studio space in Chicago, serves as his greatest inspiration, he says most of his ideas come from his head.
Whitehurst works with seven other interns to develop their creativity while producing anti-drug and violence campaigns.
ArtWorks' mission statement is to prepare underperformance teens to enter Milwaukee's workforce by utilizing the arts as a method to teach employability skills. ArtWorks provides interns with a mentor and resources that help develop their professional skills while embracing tolerance and diversity.
My partner Andrea Anderson, Social Justice and Religion reporter for the Marquette Tribune, was very helpful with her outgoing nature and willingness to take the lead with interviews. Her previous experience with Final Cut Pro was beneficial to the overall production of our slideshow. Her teamwork was very helpful and she was a wonderful partner.
